Weather is headed back towards the northeast it seems, which I'm not all that upset about. Sure driving in it sucks, but when I take Nathan out to the dog park, the mud created after the snowfall and after most of it melts is a real pain. When there's snow, Nathan just gets wet. Heavy snow is 100%, and winds are gonna be gusty. We live right near the mighty Hudson River, so the winds coming off the river are brutal and frigid. Here's the forecast:
Heavy Snow
National Championship is on, although I haven't yet tuned in. Rules of Engagement is on until 9:00 and then I'll switch on over. I think it's a repeat though, but I'm going to watch it anyway because Patrick Warburton is one funny mo-fo. I hope Oregon punks these jack wagons from Auburn. Auburn is giving 1.5 points (for you non-gamblers, if you put money on Auburn, they'd need to win by at least 2 points for you to win). Let's Go Ducks! I hope The Duck has to do 200 pushups.
Looks like there's only three hours left to vote on the first WRT poll ever. I am going to remove it but just wanted to let everyone know the results.
The question: What's your favorite city to visit in the United States?
51 of you voted, the winner is...
New York City (25 votes). Nearly half of you. It's a shame the rest of the 2 million people who crowd the streets of The City That Never Sleeps, otherwise it would have been even more of a landslide.
LA was second with 7 votes, with 6 votes, Boston came in third (similar to their finish in the AL East this year), Miami was fourth with 2 votes, and Aspen (not sure how I decided on Aspen for the final choice) was fifth with 1 vote. Ten of you chose "Other", but only one told me what that other was, Bruce I think said Key West.
Let's crunch a few numbers and spit some knowledge about the greatest city ever! (courtesy of wikipedia)
Nicknames: Gotham, The Big Apple, The City That Never Sleeps 5: number of boroughs - Brooklyn, Bronx, Manhattan, Queens,Staten Island 40°43′N74°0′W - Coordinates 2027: total number of bridges and tunnels in the NYC metro area Kings County: otherwise known as Brooklyn is the most heavily populated borough (2.567 million people) Queens: by area, the largest of the five boroughs (109 sq/mi) State Fruit: coincidentally, the apple
SportsHistory - On this day in 1982, the Bengals beat Chargers in -59° F (-51° C) to win AFC championship. The actually temperature was -9°, but wind chills brought that number way down. Cincinnati won the game 27-7 to advance to their first Super Bowl, Super Bowl XVI. (They eventually lost to the 49ers 26-21; Joe Montana was named the games MVP)
Birthdays - "Big Dog" Glenn Robinson is 38 years-old today. Best known for his short but stellar college career at Purdue, he also played for 11 seasons in the NBA (the majority with the Bucks), albeit with much less success. He left Purdue after two seasons, but certainly left his mark. He was the only player with 1,000 points, 500 rebounds, 100 steals, 100 assists, and 50 blocked shots in Purdue's illustrious history. A big dog indeed. Happy birthday Glenn, whatever it is you're doing now.
Deaths - The pioneer of rockabilly Zeb Turner passed away on this day back in 1978. In 1951, he released Chew Tobacco Rag, which I've never heard until today. Kind of a funny song with a lot of truth to it. Take a listen first and take a moment of silence after it, remembering the life of a trailblazer. Rest in peace Zeb.
Events in History - On this day 110 years ago (1901 for you math majors out there), oil was first discovered in the great state of Texas. A well at Spindletop (in Beaumont TX) struck oil and soon enough was producing over 100,000 barrels a day. This led to the formation of Gulf Oil and Texaco and established the Texas Oil Boom, making the United States the leading oil producer in the world. Anthony Lucas led the drilling and the geyser was then called the Lucas Gusher. Thanks Texas; and thank you Mr. Lucas.
I know, that's a lot of information to process in one sitting, so keep checking it throughout the day, try to soak in little bits at a time. I try to divulge information from time to time that might make interesting dialogue in case you experience an awkward silence at some point.
To recap: Bengals over Chargers in coldest game in NFL history. Glenn Robinson is 38. Zeb Turner, of Chew Tobacco Rag fame, passed away. Lucas Gusher established the US as leading oil producer 110 years ago.
