Yes, you read correctly! The Fighting Irish of Notre Dame are packing up their Big East bags and will move on to the Atlantic Coastal Conference. The only exception to this deal will be the sports of Football (Independent) and Hockey (Hockey East). ND Athletic Director Jack Swarbrick did not sell Notre Dame's soul by placing them within the confines of a football conference. The Irish will however play 5 games each season against ACC schools. No word on when the Irish will leave the Big East because of legal issues with exiting. In order to leave the Big East without a penalty, the school has to give the conference 27 months notice. Our best guess is that ND won't sacrifice the cash and will stick around until 2015.
Notre Dame will join the following schools in the ACC:
1. BC
2. Clemson
3. Duke
4. Florida State
5. Georgia tech
6. NC State
7. Maryland
8. UMiami
9. UNC
10. University of Virginia
11. Virginia Tech
12. Wake Forest
With Future members being Pitt, Syracuse and Notre Dame.
What does this mean for Notre Dame fans in NYC (aka Subway Fans)?
--> The Irish will be playing games closer to the tri-state area...well within driving distance at least: BC, Maryland, UVA, Pitt, Syracuse
Ryan is a die hard Duke Fan and I am a die hard Irish fan. Should be interesting to see them play against each other in Hoops!
